Jane Bakaluba fled her native Uganda in the early 1970s to escape an oppressive political regime and to seek better opportunities in a new country. Bakaluba, now a resident of Rotary Manor in San Rafael, Calif., describes herself as a natural caretaker.

Miriam Robinson was born in Massachusetts, but her 30 years of missionary work have taken her to India and Thailand. Robinson, now a resident of The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens, talks about merging her love of science with her spiritual needs.

A great room, a large country kitchen and an inviting dining room stand at the heart of the home. The bedrooms open into this central common area. The design may not sound radical, but then it is not for a family home. It is actually a skilled nursing center. ABHOW expects to open the first of these cottage-model centers within the next few years, and we plan to integrate aspects of the concept into our new and redeveloped continuing care retirement communities in the future.
